A SpaceX rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral in the early morning hours on Wednesday. The launch was routine, given SpaceX leads the world in rocket launches by volume. Its payload, however, was a different story.
SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket carried 24 satellites from Amazon’s Project Kuiper—a direct competitor to SpaceX’s own Starlink. About an hour after liftoff Wednesday morning, the Elon Musk-helmed aerospace company confirmed on social media platform X that the satellites had been successfully deployed.
“It definitely shows that Amazon is serious about getting Kuiper online if it’s going to a company that is its biggest competitor in this space for help to do this and do it at the speed that it wants,” says Clayton Swope, deputy director of the Aerospace Security Project at CSIS.02
Northern Virginia, by far, has been the star of the data center boom. Home to nearly 600 data centers—the most in the world—it’s earned the nickname “Data Center Alley.” It’s also a market that CoreWeave has largely avoided.
“We’ve stayed away from tier one markets like in Northern Virginia,” CoreWeave chief strategy officer and co-founder Brian Venturo told Inc. in late May. “It’s a food fight there: All the hyperscalers are after any watt of extra power. For us to go in as a smaller company, it’d be impossible for us to build the scale we need.”
Shares of CoreWeave jumped roughly 8.3 percent after the news was announced Tuesday morning.
Luring investment to the city of Lancaster, the county seat, is expected to spur roughly 600 new jobs in an area that’s struggled with high levels of poverty for many years. The poverty rate in Lancaster is nearly 21 percent, according to 2023 data from the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s about double the national poverty rate, which sat at 11.5 percent in 2023. Meanwhile, Lancaster County’s poverty rate is 8.7 percent.
Building out data centers could also help fuel a better economic outlook for impoverished areas across Pennsylvania, potentially reinvigorating parts of a state that’s already an energy production leader.
